Housing officers sweep Belhaven neighborhood

Clarion Ledger: "When Jackson code-enforcement officers pulled up Friday in front of 1426 St. Mary St. in Belhaven, Howard Gober made a run for it. Code-enforcement officer Bonnie Barthel said Gober, who owns the house, has a history of code violations and failed to appear in environmental court on Thursday. WLBT Three On Your Side: Update on Junky Jackson Properties: There are several updates on run down and junky properties we've featured in recent news reports. Currently the department of Community Improvement is working over twelve hundred cases of code violations....The city had to finally come and clean up the property, and they plan to send a bill to the land owner. A cleanup fee will also be sent to the owner of 1426 St. Mary Street, where a once trashy yard can now once again pass code in the Belhaven neighborhood. Lewis says, "The bill on the St. Mary Street was right at the $2,000.00 range....

LeFleur Lakes

Jackson Clarion Ledger: "A group of dozens of architects and engineers will wrap up work tonight on plans for development of the property surrounding the proposed LeFleur Lakes project. Their weeklong work session, or charrette, ends with a final presentation to the public from 7-9 p.m."....more...

Dumpster Day

Saturday is Dumpster Day for Belhaven - Eltonwood Drive, north off Elton Road.

Residents can bring yard debris or other household items 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting. Tires, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, chemicals and gas tanks will not be accepted. Businesses cannot participate, and proof of residency may be required. For more information, call the Solid Waste Division at (601) 960-1193.

LeFleur Lakes Update

The Jackson Free Press and Northside Sun both recently carried pieces on the status of the LeFleur Lakes project.

JFP: "The results are in from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study of the LeFleur Lakes project, and, according to a report in The Clarion-Ledger, the Corps says it isn’t economically feasible. Estimating a price tag of $1.2 billion—which is a figure quite north of the Lakes’ developer $200 million-$300 million estimates—the Corps doesn’t recommend federal involvement. So what’s the next logical step?"...more...
