2007 Legislative Races

Belhaven will be a battle ground for two legislative races in 2007.

Cory Wilson (R), former President of the Belhaven Improvement Association and a founder of the Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Association, is challenging incumbent Cecil Brown (D) for the Mississippi House of Representatives District 66 seat. Brown, first elected in 1999, serves as Chairman of the House Education Committee and was formerly chief-of-staff to then Governor Ray Mabus. Brown codelivered the Democratic Party response to Barbour's State of the State this year. MississippiPolitics.com has a feature on this race and here is Wilson's release.

David Blount (D), Communications Director for Eric Clark and Belhaven resident, is challenging incumbent Richard White (R) for the Mississippi State Senate District 29 seat. Blount is vice president of Parents for Public Schools and serves on the state PTA Board. MississippiPolitics.com has a feature on this race as well, and StateDesk.com has Blount's release and an announcement e-mail. White, first elected in 1989, is Vice Chairman of the Constitution committee and faced a closely contested race in 2003 which resulted in an extraordinary election ordered by the Senate (MagnoliaReport.com has a recap on that battle).

Horton Foote play at New Stage

Northeast Ledger: "If the film adaptation of Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" had an emotional impact on you, it's partially because the Oscar-winning screenplay is by Horton Foote, whose southern drama "The Trip to Bountiful" opens on Tuesday at New Stage Theatre in Jackson. It replaces the production of "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," but season tickets are still valid."

Belhaven's Historic Campus

Belhaven College has been featured on the Historic Campus Architecture Project (HCAP) of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). The HCAP website is the first nationwide architecture and landscape database of independent colleges and university campuses.

With it's designation as a historical landmark, the Belhaven College campus is rich with classic architectural design. The highlighted buildings for the HCAP website are Preston Hall, Fitzhugh Hall, and the lagoon that ties the two buildings together.

The HCAP website has been designed to help researchers along with others to users, and is available to the general public. Barbara S. Christen, Senior Advisor for the CIC, said that "the architectural styles, designers, building types, and historical, educational, and religious contextx of each institution can all be easily explored... (there is a ) wealth of text and images of buildings and sites on the HCAP website."
